Samsung with this will become first ever to feature the new-scratch resistant glass in its phone cameras.
The announcement was made by Corning, a company that manufactures Gorilla Glass in a press release on the new Gorilla products.
The vice President and General Manager of Corning, Jaymin Amin said that an ideal solution for camera lens covers has been engineered.
“Our Gorilla Glass DX products offer the industry’s best combination of optical performance and protection for the ultimate consumer experience,” said Amin.
Features of new Gorilla Glass
Corning’s newest generation of Gorilla Glass isn’t just better at withstanding drops. It also avoids those deep scratches that mar the device’s screen and body.
The new glass, called Gorilla Glass Victus, survives drops up to 2 meters (6.56 feet) onto hard, rough surfaces. Other glasses typically fail when dropped from less than 0.8 meters, and the last generation of Corning’s glass, Gorilla Glass 6, withstood 1-meter drops.
When it comes to gouges, Gorilla Glass Victus is up to two times more scratch-resistant than its predecessor and up to four-times more resistant than competing aluminosilicate glasses. In other words, it takes two-times as much force to get a scratch on Victus versus Gorilla Glass 6. The new glass prevents the deep scratches found on phones but not the micro-abrasions that seem to appear almost as soon as a user takes a new phone out of its box.
Samsung to add Gorilla Glass to its smartphone
Samsung will introduce the first Gorilla Glass Victus devices “in the near future,” Corning said. It’s likely the South Korean company’s new Note 20 will incorporate the glass in its design. Samsung will introduce the phone — and four other devices — at a virtual Unpacked event at 7 a.m. PT on Aug. 5. Along with the Note, it’s expected to introduce the second generation of its Galaxy Fold foldable device and new wearables.
